Truckin'

Truckin'
1920 - Words and Music by Ted Koehler and Rube Bloom

Here's one of the many stories about the dance that came out of Harlem in the 30's. Bandleader Jimmy Lunceford said: "In 1936, I left the Apollo for a very short time and played a date with Don Redman in Washington, D.C., and that's where I originated the dance `Trucking.' During rehearsing, Don and the band were playing `Honeysuckle Rose' and I was just fooling around with some new dance steps, following the rhythm of the band. Don liked what I was doing because he told me to put that dance in the show. I called it `Trucking' and before long it swept the country. "
